The gas and operating conditions guide the system design
Selecting specialty-gas equipment involves more than final pressure. Gas composition, inlet pressure and temperature, required flow, duty, hazardous-area classification, utilities, controls, storage and documentation all help determine the appropriate compressor and drive configuration.
L&W offers low-, medium- and high-pressure compressors with atmospheric intake, along with booster configurations that use a defined inlet pressure. Existing machines may also be adapted, and special systems can be calculated around specific project requirements.
- Full gas composition and impurities

Pressure classes
Compressor families for different inlet and outlet conditions
Ambient-intake and booster examples cover approximately 7.4–10 bar(g) final pressure, depending on the listed configuration.
Ambient-intake and booster examples cover approximately 14–45 bar(g) final pressure in the listed configurations.
Ambient-intake compressors and boosters include listed configurations from 50 to 420 bar(g) final pressure.
Selection guidance: these ranges summarize representative configurations. The most appropriate compressor family depends on the gas, inlet condition, flow, temperature, duty and overall project requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Specialty-gas compressor questions
Which gases can these systems support?
L&W offers configurations for hydrogen, natural gas, biogas, argon, helium and nitrogen, along with selected CO, CO₂ and mixed-gas applications. Compatibility is reviewed for the exact gas composition and operating conditions.
What pressure range is available?
Low-, medium- and high-pressure configurations are available. Representative systems reach final pressures from approximately 7.4 to 420 bar(g), with final selection based on the gas, inlet conditions and duty.
What is the difference between a compressor and a booster?
Ambient-intake compressors begin near atmospheric pressure. Boosters use a defined positive inlet pressure and raise it to the required final pressure. Actual capacity changes with inlet and outlet conditions.
Are explosion-proof configurations available?
Yes. Explosion-proof components are available for these systems. LW Americas will review the required hazardous-area classification, component scope and supporting documentation for the specific project.
Can LW Americas supply storage and controls?
Yes. Available system options include modular storage, manual or automatic storage control, pressure reduction, purification and Remote Pro monitoring and control.
What information is helpful for selecting a system?
Please share the gas composition, inlet pressure and temperature, required flow, final pressure, duty, hazardous-area classification, utilities, installation conditions, desired system scope and documentation requirements.
